In March 2011, an anti-regime uprising led to an all out civil war in Syria. It is strenuously argued that it was the absolute brutality of Syria’s President, Bashar al-assad, that brought about the uprising to begin with. While he promised, in 2000, that his leadership would look out for the best interest of the Syrian people, Bashar al-assad has become known worldwide as a brutal dictator. Human rights watch groups state that the Syrian government continues to use “barrel bombs” against its civilian population. The “barrel bombs” are crude weapons made out of barrels filled with oil, explosives and shrapnel. The government uses these weapons despite a United Nations Security Council resolution (passed in Feb. 2014) that bans the use of such “barrel bombs.” Since the passage of the resolution, the Syrian government has killed more than 6,000 civilians — including 1,892 children — by barrel bombs.
President Bashar al-assad’s government used siege and starvation tactics in 2014, with desperately hungry civilians eating leaves and grass just to survive. There is also very credible evidence that Bashar al-assad used chemical weapons against the Syrian people. The United Nations estimates that more than 240,000 people have been killed since the civil war began in 2011. Worsening conditions have forced more than 11 million Syrians to leave their homes in Syria. Thus, the creation of over 4 million Syrian refugees who are seeking asylum in other countries. These displaced people fled Syria for their lives. The choice was either flee and leave everything behind…or be killed. Not much of a choice…I’d say.
To add insult to injury, their trek has been faaaaarrrr from a walk in the park. Refugee camps, that many are staying in, are over crowded and unsanitary. Many of the children are suffering from diarrheal diseases and dehydration. The deplorable conditions in these camps has basically forced the refugees to push towards a better life in European countries such as Hungary, Germany and Great Britain. So, what type of welcome has these refugees received from these countries? O.k…let’s see. Hungary recently put up a fence with barbed razor wire at the top to keep the refugees out.
Hungary’s Prime Minister actually said to the Syrian Refugees, “Don’t Come.” (It still makes me shake my head) Great Britain has only allowed a little over one thousand of these refugees to cross its borders. And…Germany…Oh, Germany…”You seem like the only country that has shown some decency & compassion to these hungry, scared & homeless human beings.” Yes… Germany is welcoming these refugees and will probably end up taking in about 800,000 this year.
For the rest of the back turners, fence builders & other indifferent asses out there, I say this to you, “I ask you to remember the saying, ‘But for the grace of God, there Go I’.” You see…the evil side of people always tends to forget that they too could find themselves in the same conditions as the Syrian refugees are finding themselves in today. God expects more from us…a whole lot more. He expects us to treat others as we would want others to treat us… if we found ourselves in similar circumstances. I know this much…if I was a refugee, I would be praying to God that some other country would take me in…provide me with shelter, food, water & a place to clean up. People…these things I would ask for are not extravagant things…not by far. These are basic necessities that are needed by any human being for their health, safety & well being.
I mentioned Hungary & Great Britain in terms of their indifference to the plight of these Syrian people. But, what about the rest of the world? “O, Brother, Where Art Thou in the midst of this refugee crisis?” What are you Japanese people doing to assist? What are you African people doing to assist? What are you Chinese people doing to assist? What are you Russian people doing to assist? What are you Israeli people doing to assist? Oh, Oh, Oh….last, but definitely not least…What are you American people doing to assist in this crisis which is happening right before your eyes? Did anybody else see on tv today the 2 year old little boy lying lifeless, yes…lifeless on a beach near the Turkish resort of Bodrum? You see, he drowned, along with his mother and sibling, attempting to reach the Greek island of Kos. His name is Aylan Kurdi & he too, was a Syrian refugee. Oooohhh, this poor beautiful baby drowned & that did not have to happen!!! People… Where is the love ???
So, where do we go from here? Let me tell you. If you are not one of the refugees, I want you to thank God for his grace & mercy in sparing you such a plight. I want you to ask God what you can do to assist these fellow human beings of ours. I tell people all the time, “the least you can do is pray for someone else.” If you can do more than just pray…then, do that too. God is watching all of us…all of the time. Remember what I said earlier, “But for the grace of God, there go I.” And, Jesus says, we reap what we sow. If you choose to sow selfishly & if you choose not to help… God will let circumstances come into your life where others will be selfish towards you when you need help.
These Syrian people are a part of the human race & deserve to be treated with respect & decency. To these Syrian refugees I say this, “I pray, in the name of Jesus, that God blesses you and keeps you and makes his face to shine upon you. Please don’t be discouraged by those people who treat you unkindly through this ordeal. Keep your head up & know that God is God & always will be God. He is in charge. Look to him for your help & he will send what you need. God knows that I have much love for you.”
