Yes…Pope Francis is here in the United States! People are coming out in droves to see him…to touch him. Many are screaming his name…waiving their flags…just, smiling from ear to ear. They see this as a once in a lifetime opportunity.
But guess what??? Even with all the cheering & smiling going on… all is not happy on the home front of America regarding our dear Pope Francis. No. No. No…not at all. There are many Americans very concerned about the messages that Pope Francis is bringing to the U.S. Oh, yeah. You see… Where Pope Francis leads, his messages also follow right behind him. And…his messages are creating all kinds of upset around this country…even among those who call themselves Catholics. Specifically, it is his views on capitalism that has created most of the stirs.
O.k…America is a capitalistic society. Meaning? Capitalism is defined by Merriam-Webster as an “economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market.” In 1998, when he still went by his birth name of Jorge Mario Bergoglio, he wrote a book titled “Dialogues between John Paul II and Fidel Castro.”
Pope Francis wrote, “While it can be good for development, capitalism lacks morals & promotes selfish behavior.” He further comments, “What the Church criticizes is the spirit that capitalism has encouraged, utilizing capital to subject and oppress the man.” He goes on to add that capitalism “develops with characteristics of individuality, in a life where men look for their own good and not the common good.” And…Pope Francis has continued these arguments against capitalism through the years. As recent as this past July 2015, he told people in Bolivia that “the unfettered pursuit of money is the dung of the devil.” Whoa!!! Pope Francis…you know with that statement… you did not just step on the toes of many in America…you stomped on them.
So…it is not hard to see that Pope Francis is not a fan of capitalism. Not at all. But…guess what? He is in good company. Why? Because God does not favor capitalism either. O.k. Capitalism is a system that favors “the haves” & shuns the “have nots.” It does encourage selfishness & individualism…just like Pope Francis said. In this country, it is drilled in us to pursue money…the more we pursue…the better. You know, there is even a saying that goes something like this, “The one who dies with the most toys…wins.” Well, I can tell you this…God is not the one who made up that saying. And, Pope Francis understands that.
For God…pursuing money is not suppose to be the aim of your life. Not at all. It’s not suppose to be about grabbing all you can…any way you can. (Mmmmhh…that sounds like Donald Trump) For God…all that grabbing = GREED, & for him…GREED = Sin. Therefore, any economic system that encourages GREED, comes straight from the pits of hell…straight from the devil. Isn’t that what the Pope said? Damn right that’s what he said. And…he said the truth. This is a major, major problem in this country. The rich just seem to get greedier & greedier. For them…there is never enough. How ironic? You see…the people who are starving in this world are saying the same thing…there is never enough.
The greediness of wealthy people makes absolutely no sense. It’s actually obscene. Let me give you a very recent example. True Story. In August 2015, Turing Pharmaceuticals, a start-up company, acquired the drug, call Daraprim. This drug is needed by AIDS patients & other patients suffering with cancer… so they can stay alive. That’s how important this drug is to these patients. The owner of Turing Pharmaceuticals, Martin Shkreli, immediately raised the price from $13.50 a tablet to $750 a tablet. That is an increase in cost that is over 5000%. If the price stays at $ 750.00 a tablet, the annual cost of treatment for some patients would soar to hundreds of thousands of dollars. If that type of thinking is not obscene & diabolical…I don’t know what is. This dude, Martin Shkreli…is already rich. He was a former hedge fund manager.
O.k…there is some good news here. That bastard got the backlash of a lifetime. Yes! People rallied to the cause. The backlash was so severe that Shkreli said Tuesday, that he would not raise the cost to $ 750.00 a tablet. He said & I quote, “Yes it is absolutely a reaction — there were mistakes made with respect to helping people understand why we took this action, I think that it makes sense to lower the price in response to the anger that was felt by people.”
Well, I want to say to Mr. Shkreli, “How much is enough? Man… you were willing to allow people to die just so you could get even richer? You are a no good (*&^% and you had no business being born you…*&^%$%$…and, another thing… You common $#@&%.”
O.k… I think I got it out of my system…Mmmmhh…I’m not sure…Maybe???… for now. You see…Shkreli still has not said, yet, what he will set the price at for the Daraprim tablets.
So…I think Pope Francis might be on to something. And… God thinks so too.
